Galaxiki was an award-winning community platform centered around a virtual galaxy that could be freely edited by its users. The galaxy consisted of over a million solar systems animated in real-time, site members were able to edit planetary physics and to write collaborative science fiction stories.
Galaxiki was originally launched in 2007, it was operated by a non-profit organization. It was featured on Yahoo, About.com, redOrbit, it was project of the week in Linux Journal and it was one of the winners of the Web 2.0 Awards.
The site was popular in the late 2000s and early 2010s among hobby sci-fi writers, and a lot of collaborative stories that took place in the virtual galaxy were written and published by its users, while the plots were outlined and discussed in the platform's forums.
Unfortunately the platform had to be shut down in 2021.
Activity was almost zero within the past 3 years, at the same time the site was constantly being attacked by hackers (DDoS attacks, SQL injection attempts, forum & blog SPAM bots, etc...).
While hacking attempts remained unsuccessful, it became more and more time consuming to deal with such issues, and so the project was finally abandoned in the second half of 2021.
I would like to thank all the writers who contributed to the platform and helped to turn it into a successful community!
There are backups of all of the content btw, maybe there will be a read-only version of the site one day.
