It's been my experience that most science-fiction is remarkably thin on the "science" part. And I don't think I've ever read a book where detailed science knowledge is required for understanding. There are many where the science adds flavoring to the narrative (in the same vein that many novels drop pop-culture, literary, or historical references), but that's about it. If worse comes to worse, avoid anything labeled "hard science fiction" and you should be fine.
