Very stupid question, but...

How do I add planets to a community solar system?

You can't.

Might I recommend, before you continue any further, that you read the info page (https://galaxiki.org/info/), perhaps browse the Wiki (https://galaxiki.org/wiki/kbw/), then take a look at the instructions in the Tutorial System (SBC507).

Also, please read the instructions in the Tutorial System - most new users don't.

Sigh...

Well, how is it that I'm unable to edit the physical properties of a solar system, then? I don't want to have to pay to do anything here...

Certain features of the site (including editing physical properties) only become available once you've reached a certain level. You earn points towards additional levels by editing systems, posting in forums, filling out your profile and website, etc. Basically, by being a good member of the community. The features that are locked are: A. to ensure you are a good member of the community before you can access them, and B. as a reward for the work you have done in improving the site. Finally, websites always have costs associated with them, hosting, bandwidth, and what-not. If you don't want to pay to use a site, your ability to complain about that site is significantly curtailed.

I would also like to note, the Tutorial System clearly states "As you edit systems, update your profile, or create your homepage, you will earn experience points which will unlock additional features of the site" which is why I wanted you to read those instructions.
